Two listings can both be called “complete mechatronic” and still describe different assemblies.

One may contain a hydraulic valve body and solenoids. Another may also include the transmission controller and sensors. A third may physically include the controller but still require OEM programming before the transmission can operate correctly.

For transmission control parts, the product name is not the bill of materials. The assembly must be defined before it can be compared.

This distinction is especially important for valve bodies, TCUs/TCMs and mechatronic assemblies because transmission manufacturers integrate hydraulic and electronic functions differently. Super5 therefore treats the market name as a category label and the assembly scope as the technical product definition.

These four fields tell a buyer substantially more than “valve body,” “TCU” or “complete mechatronic” on its own.

Two quotes cannot be compared fairly until their hardware contents and electronic state have been normalized.

A lower price may reflect a smaller assembly scope rather than the same product at a better price.

The Same Product Name Can Represent Different Hardware

Terms such as valve body, TCU/TCM and mechatronic describe functions or assembly concepts. They do not create one universal bill of materials across every automatic transmission, DCT or CVT.

A useful product definition therefore needs to answer four separate questions.

The practical point is simple: a title defines a category; the assembly scope defines the product.

Three OEM Architectures Show Why “Mechatronic” Is Not a Universal BOM

ZF 6HP / 8HP Electronic Module + Hydraulic Module

ZF divides its mechatronic into an electronic module containing transmission electronics, connector and sensors, and a hydraulic module containing the valves that execute pressure and clutch/brake control.

VOLKSWAGEN 7-SPEED DSG Electronic + Electrohydraulic Control in One Assembly

Volkswagen's official training material describes the mechatronic as combining the electronic control unit and electrohydraulic control unit, with most relevant sensors and actuators integrated in the module.

MITSUBISHI TC-SST Valve Body + TCM, With Programming Required

Mitsubishi's official repair bulletin defines the TC-SST mechatronic assembly as the valve body and transmission control module, and states that a new assembly's TCM is not pre-programmed with operating software.

These are not three competing definitions. They are three examples of why the correct definition must come from the architecture of the specific transmission.

Normalize the Assembly Before Comparing Price

Consider three illustrative quotes that all use the market label “complete mechatronic.”

The table is illustrative, not a universal parts rule. Its purpose is to show why price comparison should happen after the assembly has been normalized into comparable fields.

All three can be described casually as a “valve body” in the market. That is why the label itself should never replace an included-components specification.

“TCU Included” Does Not Mean “Ready to Operate”

The electronic controller introduces a second dimension that pure mechanical parts do not have: its operating state.

Mitsubishi's official TC-SST service bulletin is a clear example. The replacement mechatronic assembly already contains the valve body and TCM, yet Mitsubishi explicitly states that the new TCM is not programmed with operating software. The repair procedure therefore includes programming the new electronic control unit.

Hardware fact and operating state are different facts.

“TCU included” confirms that the controller is physically present. It does not, by itself, prove that the controller is programmed, coded, adapted or otherwise ready for the exact vehicle application.

The correct service requirement must always come from the OEM procedure for the exact transmission/vehicle combination. It should not be generalized from one transmission architecture to another.

A Better Product Record Replaces “Complete” With Explicit Fields

The word complete is useful in conversation but weak as technical data. A more useful product record states what is actually present.

This format makes two offers comparable even when the sellers use different market terminology.

TCU and TCM Describe a Control Function; Serviceability Is a Separate Question

TCU (Transmission Control Unit) and TCM (Transmission Control Module) are commonly used terms for the transmission's electronic controller. The terminology itself is not the main purchasing problem.

The important question is whether the controller is a separate service part on the exact transmission, integrated into the mechatronic, or removable from a larger assembly under the OEM repair procedure.

FUNCTION VS PHYSICAL PART “The transmission has a TCU” does not automatically mean “the TCU can be replaced independently.”

Functional identity and physical service-part definition are different layers of information.

When Is an Assembly Definition Complete Enough to Compare?

Before treating two valve-body, TCU or mechatronic offers as the same product, four conditions should be clear.

1. Transmission Identity

The exact transmission and applicable version are established.

2. Hardware Scope

The hydraulic body, solenoids, sensors, harness and controller inclusion are explicitly stated.

3. Electronic State

If a controller is included, its state is not assumed from the word “new,” “complete” or “with TCU.”

4. Service Context

Any OEM programming, coding, adaptation or teach-in requirement is understood for the exact application.

Only after those fields align do condition, warranty and price become meaningful comparison points.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a mechatronic unit the same as a valve body?

Not universally. A valve body primarily refers to the hydraulic control assembly. A mechatronic is an integrated electrohydraulic control assembly, but the exact included components depend on the transmission architecture and the way the service part is defined.

Does a complete mechatronic always include the TCU?

No universal assumption is safe. The supplier or product record should state whether the electronic controller is included rather than relying on the word “complete.”

If the TCU is included, is the unit plug-and-play?

Not necessarily. Some applications require OEM programming, coding, adaptation or teach-in after installation. Mitsubishi's TC-SST service procedure, for example, requires programming a new mechatronic assembly's TCM.

Why can two mechatronic quotes have very different prices?

The hardware scope, controller inclusion, electronic state and condition may differ. Normalize those fields first before interpreting the price difference.
